Asobi Seksu

Post by BlackCheremy on Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:34 pm

So besides Daydream + Nightmare.. the other release I'm really looking forward to this year is Asobi Seksu's next album Hush!

Anyone else a fan? They're kind of a shoegazey band.. really noisy dreamy stuff.

I got the first single Me & Mary when it came out. The a-side's pretty good, but the b-side, Breathe Into Glass is amazing...

February's gonna milk me dry.

Not electronic.. hmmm.. Yuki does play keyboards, so there's a dreamy atmosphere from those, but it's not like synthy electronica stuff. It's more organs and jangly quiet guitars. It's a combination of noisy guitars and keyboard. Not all songs, some of them sound almost punky. Sorry, it's hard to describe. Razz

They wring the guitars and stuff through effect pedals a lot that give it this weird sound. There is an occasional synthy sound, I think there's some noticeable synth on Pink Cloud Tracing Paper.

A lot of the dreamy quality is her vocals, they're "ethereal" or whatever, it's really nice.

Yes! I went to see Asobi Seksu live in Nottingham last year, and they were great despite a poor venue. Shame Yuki gut her hand on the cymbols while drumming to Red Sea (she switches places with te drummer for the second half of this song, which is quite a site) and had to end the gig early. I have the first two albums, and like you cannot wait for the 3rd.

I would describe their sound as American Shoegaze, similar to Interpol but with female vocals. Closest Buriguri song to this sound would probably be 'HIDOI ame'.

Certainly true. You wouldn't believe she is tiny and smokes like a trooper would you? Well it's true, I saw her outside the venue chain smoking like their was no tomorrow.

Woo, they're wastin' no time! Seems like they're gonna release a second single, Familiar Light. One of the better ones on the album!

Pre-Order: Asobi Seksu - Familiar Light

Following the well-received ‘Me & Mary’ single of late 2007, ‘Familiar Light’ precedes the new album ‘Hush’ with aplomb – strung around a vocal melody from Yuki Chikudate as ebullient and memorable as it is something of a departure for the band, who here deal with subverting grand, classic pop structures as opposed to towering walls of sound.

“The perfect ratio of sweet vocal to abrasive rock” The Guardian

“Played with grace and glee, it swoons brightly “ The Independent

“A stunningly beautiful…breathtaking” NME

released: 9th Feb 2009.

Order Nao!

Looks like it's only a one track though... It's cheap though so I may still get it. bounce

The new album's out, also there's an exclusive acoustic album being sold at One Little Indian.. really pretteh stuff. Acoustic guitars, xylophones, little twinkly things and her vocals are lovely.

Acoustic at Olympic Studios:

Breathe Into Glass
Walk On The Moon
Meh No Mae
New Years
Little Blind Rain
Urusai Tori
Suzanne
Gliss
Familiar Light
Thursday

They're gonna be near my place this March! If I can afford it I might go see them.

Haha! Well.. she didn't hurt herself.. instead the band got themselves locked in the backroom right after Red Sea, so they didn't get to do an encore! Razz

They were so awesome live, and you're right, Yuki is a tiny lady! It was one of the better days of my life for sure..

Lol, that song seems to be bad luck. When I went to see them that ended up being unintentionally the last song too. I am glad you enjoyed it. Smile

Nice one, but that cannot beat my "Going to see Noodles and POP CHOCOLAT at Club QUE in Tokyo 3 weeks on Thursday" boast Wink
